Heart Health Heroes: Herbs and More for the Cardiovascular System

The heart is perhaps the body's strongest and most tireless muscle, never ceasing in its mission to provide the rest of the body with nutrients and oxygen. It's a thankless job; not only do we often not remember to appreciate our hearts, but our modern diet and lifestyle seems to only add more stress to our cardiovascular systems. Cardiovascular disease is among the biggest health concerns in the world today, with rates rising from 12.1 million in 1990 to 20.5 million in 2021. Because of the crucial role blood flow plays in the rest of our bodies' ability to function, ensuring the health of our hearts might be one of the best things we can do for our overall health. Read on to discover some of our favorite herbs and supplements to support your heart.

Herbs & Supplements for Heart Health

Hawthorn Berry, Leaf, & Flower

The berries, leaves, and flowers of the hawthorn plant are all well known for their cardiovascular benefits, in part due to the plant's high flavanoid content. Flavanoids are compounds found in certain plants that have been shown to reduce inflammation, fight infection, and lower risk of conditions like diabetes or cardiovascular disease. These compounds, along with others, such as oligomeric proanthocyanidins, work to allow your heart to pump blood more effectively. Hawthorn is even believed to have a stabilizing effect on irregular heartbeats and can be helpful for those with palpitations or arrhythmic heart beats.

Hawthorn is often used to help ease the symptoms of angina, a pain in the chest caused by reduced oxygen levels in the heart. Angina is often caused by the buildup of plaque in one's arteries. Hawthorn has been shown to relax and widen blood vessels and may even reduce levels of LDL cholesterol, leading to better blood flow and more oxygen making its way to the heart. These same effects can also help to lower high blood pressure and reduce strain on the heart.

Remarkably, in recent studies, this plant has been shown to be an effective method for managing symptoms of chronic heart failure, do to its ability to increase the flow of oxygen to the heart. In addition, the high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of hawthorn contribute to healthy blood pressure levels and reduce oxidative stress on the cardiovascular system, helping to prevent diseases like atherosclerosis (or hardening of the arteries).

Hawthorn berries, leaves, and flowers can be taken as tea, syrup, in capsules, or as an extract.

Linden Flower

As a traditional remedy popular for centuries in Europe, linden flowers have long been used to support heart health. Like hawthorn, linden flowers are often used by herbalists to help relieve symptoms of heart-related chest pain and angina. The plant is believed to improve blood flow to the heart, helping to provide it with the oxygen it needs, and its ability to relax and dilate blood vessels contributes to healthy blood flow and pressure levels.

Another way that linden can support the heart is through its calming effect on the nervous system. Elevated stress levels put a lot of strain on the heart, and this plant's soothing sedative effect can help control chronic stress and may help prevent many types of heart disease.

Linden is a natural, mild diuretic and may help reduce fluid retention in the body, which can lead to improved circulation and take stress off of the heart. In addition, its antioxidant effects protect the cardiovascular system from oxidative stress and development of future issues.

Motherwort

Motherwort's botanical name, Leonurus cardiaca, is derived from the Greek word for 'heart' (cardiaca), and serves as an excellent reminder of this herb's long traditional use as a means of cardiovascular support. Motherwort is commonly used to treat heart palpitations or rhythmic irregularities, particularly those linked to stress and hormonal changes. This is because motherwort is classified as a "nervine," or an herb that supports the nervous system. Motherwort soothes the nervous system, leading to decreased chronic stress and less strain on the heart.

The plant's antioxidant content and anti-inflammatory properties help reduce stress on the cardiovascular system and prevent heart disease, while its vasodilating effect helps to relax and open up blood vessels, decreasing blood pressure and reducing heart strain. Motherwort is even thought to strengthen the heart and is often used as a supplement for those with chronic heart failure and weak or irregular heartbeats.

Motherwort can be taken as a tea, in capsules, or as an extract.

Astragalus Root

Due to its ability to strengthen the heart muscle, astragalus is a common herbal supplement for those with chronic mild heart failure or other cardiovascular conditions. Astragalus root has been shown to improve contractility and efficiency of the heart, leading to better blood flow.

This root contains high amounts of flavanoids, which help to relax and dilate your arteries and can help decrease blood pressure, and some studies have shown that it may have the ability to reduce levels of LDL cholesterol. In addition, its antioxidant properties protect against heart issues as we age, and its anti-inflammatory compounds help to prevent hardening of the arteries.

Astragalus can be taken in capsule, extract, and tea form.

Eleuthero Root

Eleuthero, widely known for its ability to reduce the effects of stress, is an excellent option for concerns related to chronic anxiety. During moments of stress, your body produces cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels lead to high blood pressure, increased heart rate, and more overall stress on the heart and cardiovascular system. Eleuthero's ability to reduce cortisol levels and decrease tension in the arteries make it a great choice for those who suffer from stress-related heart conditions.

Eleuthero is also rich in antioxidants and has been shown to be effective at reducing inflammation, providing an additional layer of protection against the development of heart conditions.

Eleuthero can be taken as a tea, an extract, or in capsules.

Hibiscus Flower

Hibiscus has been revered for centuries as a natural medicine for the heart. In recent years, hibiscus flowers have further surprised scientists with their ability to reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure and reduce cholesterol levels. This flower  improves blood flow by helping to widen arteries and blood vessels, and its high content of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds protect the heart from further stress and damage.

Hibiscus is particularly remarkable in three ways. First, it is thought to have the ability to reduce blood sugar levels, which can help prevent heart issues linked to diabetes. It has also shown promising ability to reduce the absorption of fat and cholesterol, preventing both obesity and clogged arteries. Finally, it assists in detoxifying the liver, the organ responsible for processing cholesterol, and can help prevent poor liver function from affecting heart health.

Hibiscus flowers are most commonly consumed as a refreshing and delicious tea, but can also be taken as an extract or even capsules.

Buchu Leaf

Buchu is a medicinal herb native to South Africa that has grown in popularity across the rest of the world. Buchu can help lower blood pressure and improve circulation through its powerful ability to reduce inflammation. This, in combination with its antioxidant effects, promote general health and help to prevent future disease caused by inflammation and oxidative stress, including heart disease. It also acts as a natural diuretic and encourages the body to eliminate excess water, which can help maintain healthy blood pressure levels.

Like hibiscus, buchu leaf can help to detoxify the body; in this case, it is excellent for the kidneys; in fact, one of buchu's most well-known uses is as a kidney tonic. Kidneys play an important role in regulating the fluids in your body and maintaining proper blood pressure. By keeping our kidneys healthy, we can lessen strain on our hearts.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba, also known simply as ginkgo, is a species of gymnosperm tree native to East Asia, and is thought to be one of the oldest medicinal plants. Ginkgo can provide support for your heart in a variety of ways. Like many of the herbs mentioned on this list, ginkgo is a vasodilator, meaning it has the ability to relax and expand the blood vessels, improving blood flow and supporting healthy blood pressure levels. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties protect blood vessels and support long term heart health, and the plant can even help lower cortisol levels, indirectly reducing stress on the heart.

One of the more unique benefits of ginkgo include its ability to reduce blood clotting. The plant contains compounds that inhibit PAF proteins, which make blood platelets sticker and more likely to clump together. By intercepting these proteins, ginkgo reduces the likelihood of blood clots forming. Some studies have shown that ginkgo may even be able to dissolve small blood clots that have already formed.

Ginkgo is often taken as a tea, an extract, or in capsules.

Beet Root

One of the main reasons beets are such a great food and supplement for the heart is their high concentration of nitrates. The body converts nitrates to nitric oxide, which is used to relax and dilate blood vessels, support healthy circulation, and lower blood pressure. This improves oxygen supply to the heart and keeps the blood vessel lining flexible.

Nutritious beets contain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds, meaning a diet high in beets can do wonders for reducing strain on the heart. In addition, several studies have observed beets' ability to lower LDL cholesterol in the blood, and their low-calorie, high-fiber content make them a great food to assist in reaching and maintaining a healthy weight and fighting obesity, one of the biggest risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.

Beet roots are delicious eaten raw or cooked, and consuming beets as juice, juice crystals, powders, and capsules is also common.

Ginger

Ginger, a root native to East Asia, has been used medicinally as far back as 400 BC and has long been known for its ability to improve blood circulation. It's natural vasodilating effect widens blood vessels and promotes healthy blood flow, and its potassium content helps assist in regulating blood pressure and sodium levels. Ginger is also thought to decrease the amount of LDL cholesterol in the blood, reducing the likelihood of blockages and plaque buildup.

As a natural anticoagulant, ginger is able to reduce blood clotting. Like ginkgo, it has the ability to inhibit certain proteins, preventing platelets from sticking together.

Ginger is also revered as one of the best herbs for reducing inflammation, meaning it can protect your heart from damage associated with inflamed blood vessels and cardiovascular tissues, while its antioxidant content protects them from free radicals.

This root can even lower blood sugar levels, which can reduce the likelihood of heart disease linked to diabetes, and can assist the metabolism and promote weight loss. Some studies support its ability to lower cortisol levels and lessen stress on the heart.

Ginger has a bright, refreshing flavor. It is often used as a culinary aromatic and its juice is used to add flavor to dishes and beverages. You can also consume ginger as capsules, extract, or a delicious tea.

Garlic

Garlic isn't just tasty--it's also a powerful tool for your health! For heart health in particular, garlic has been shown to be effective in lowering blood pressure, with studies reporting its ability to lower both systolic and diastolic readings. This is likely due to its tendency to enhance nitric oxide production and promote the dilation of blood vessels.

Garlic also works to prohibit the buildup of plaque and LDL cholesterol in the veins, while increasing HDL cholesterol ("good" cholesterol). This can reduce blood pressure and helps prevent the arteries from hardening. In addition, garlic's anticoagulant effect helps prevent dangerous blood clots from forming.

This herb is a powerful anti-inflammatory and contains compounds that protect against oxidative stress. Garlic is also reported to improve insulin sensitivity, lowering blood sugar levels and preventing heart issues related to diabetes. It also has a positive effect on the metabolism and can help support weight management.

Garlic is one of the most popular culinary ingredients in the world, with its unique flavor a beloved aromatic in many different cultures. You can also supplement garlic through the use of extracts, oils, and capsules.

Cayenne

Perhaps one of the most powerful supplements you can take for your heart health, cayenne and its active compounds, capsaicin, is celebrated by herbalists and scientists alike for its positive effect on the cardiovascular system.

Cayenne has been historically used to relieve angina, or chest pain caused by lack of oxygen to the heart. It accomplishes this through its powerful ability to increase blood flow and reduce inflammation.

Capsaicin stimulates the release of nitrous oxide, dilating blood vessels and improving their elasticity. Cayenne can even improve sluggish circulation, which is especially beneficial to those with sedentary lifestyles or issues with blood flow. This pepper also prevents plaque formation and decreases LDL cholesterol levels while increasing good cholesterol.

As a natural anticoagulant, capsaicin naturally thins the blood, and has the ability to prevent the formation of blood clots. Like garlic and ginger, cayenne is associated with improved metabolic function and can help regulate appetite and support weight loss.

Cayenne peppers can be eaten cooked or raw, and cayenne powder is used to season food. Supplement forms include capsule and extracts.

Mustard Seed

Mustard seeds are an excellent natural supplement for lowering LDL cholesterol levels, while promoting HDL ("good") cholesterol. In addition, their natural potassium content helps regulate sodium levels and promotes healthy blood pressure, and mustard's essential Omega-3 fatty acids play a role in widening and relaxing blood vessels.

Anti-inflammatory compounds and antioxidants found in mustard seed play an important role in preventing and controlling cardiovascular issues as well as contributing to overall health. Mustard can also promote fat burning and support weight loss, while also improving insulin sensitivity and lowering blood sugar levels. Finally, it is a natural anticoagulant and may help prevent the development of blood clots.

Reishi Mushroom

Reishi is a functional mushroom native to East Asia and known for its numerous health benefits. When it comes to heart health, this is the fungus for you: from blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood clotting to inflammation, oxidation, and stress, Reishi covers all the bases.

Reishi's vasodilative properties--kickstarted by the enhanced production of nitrous oxide--help to reduce stress on the heart, increase blood flow, and maintain healthy levels of blood pressure. The mushroom's ability to improve lipid profiles (in other words, decrease LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol) prevents plaque buildup and further contributes to healthy blood flow.

Reishi is rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, making it a great preventive tool for the cardiovascular system. It is also thought to strengthen the heart muscle, ensuring it is pumping blood efficiently, and can even lower cortisol levels and reduce both emotional stress and physical stress on the heart. Finally, reishi helps to improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar.

Reishi can be taken as a tea, as a powder, in capsules, or as an extract.

Magnesium

Magnesium is known to have a powerful effect on the nervous system, but its benefits can extend to the heart as well. Magnesium is thought to regulate electrical signals in the heart, leading to a more consistent heart rhythm. In fact, magnesium deficiency can lead to irregular heart rhythms, so it is very important to make sure you are getting enough magnesium in your diet!

Magnesium also relaxes blood vessels and balances electrolyte levels, both of which help with lowering blood pressure and easing strain on the heart. Studies show that magnesium supplements have the ability to reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure in those with hypertension.

Magnesium can reduce risk of calcium buildup, promoting continued elasticity of the arteries. It can also reduce LDL cholesterol levels, lower blood sugar levels, and inhibit inflammatory compounds associated with cardiovascular issues. Magnesium has been shown to to help prevent platelet aggregation and manage blood clots, and its calming effect on the nervous system can soothe the brain and promote relaxation, easing stress on the heart.

L-Carnitine

L-Carnitine is naturally occurring amino acid derivative and has been found to play a big role in supporting our cardiovascular system. L-Carnitine is particularly useful for those with congestive heart failure or similar conditions. This is due to its ability to enhance energy production within heart cells, which allows the heart to function more effectively. By increasing energy production, it can also alleviate the fatigue and exercise intolerance associated with congestive hearth failure.

L-Carnitine has anti-inflammatory properties and can help to reduce oxidative stress to the heart and arteries. It also improves blood flow and promotes healthy oxygen delivery to the heart, preventing and relieving conditions like ischemia and angina.

L-Carnitine's ability to stabilize electrolyte levels helps regulate electrical signals in the heart, helping the heartbeat to remain steady and regular. It also promotes strength of the heart and assists the muscle in efficient contraction. L-Carnitine is also associated with healthy cholesterol balance, weight loss, and even improved recovery from heart attacks.

Conclusion

While supplements can help greatly, one of the best things we can do for our hearts is pay attention to what we eat. Making the decision to reach for foods low in cholesterol, saturated fats, and sodium and high in Omega-3, whole grains, proteins, and healthy fats can make a huge difference and reduce overall strain on your heart. In addition, remaining active is key: the recommended amount of aerobic exercise is at least 150 minutes per week, or about 20-30 minutes a day. This can be as simple as going for a walk around the neighborhood every evening; the key is to pick an activity you enjoy that keeps you moving.

In a society that doesn't prioritize health and nutrition, promotes stress, and leaves many of us with less time for physical activity, it is more important now than ever to pay attention to our heart health in order to prevent future heart disease as we age. One thing is certain: in making meaningful changes to our lifestyle and learning about the many ways we can promote cardiovascular health, our heart (and the rest of our bodies!) will thank us.
